

The park is spread over 640 sq km (including the buffer and core forest zones). Its proximity to excellent wildlife buffers and great landscapes makes it a great wildlife getaway. Because of its rich topography, there is a plethora of wildlife found here. The estimated average number of herbivores in Nagarhole is 108 animals per sq km. Many tigers and leopards reside in its dense jungles. Sometimes, Leopards can be spotted at the fringes. Notable species in Nagarhole include, the dhole, Asian Elephant, jungle cat, striped hyena, jackal, chital, gaur, sambar, mouse deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, crested porcupine and the blacknaped hare. Primates include the common langur and bonnet macaque.
It is also a haven for birders, the red spurfowl, grey junglefowl, blue-faced malkhoa. the rare yellow-browed bulbul, white-cheeked barbet, Nilgiri flycatcher, Malabar pied hornbill, goldenbacked parakeet, southern tree pie, short-eared owl, oriental scops owl, Pacific swallow, grasshopper warbler, orphean warbler, yellow-billed babbler, green imperial pigeon and the white-bellied woodpecker can be spotted here. The reptilian species include the spectacled cobra, common krait, bamboo pit viper, Russell’s viper, rock python, common rat snake, chequered keelback, green whip snake, common Indian bronzeback, flying snake, wolf snake, trinket snake, marsh crocodile and Indian monitor lizard.
The park is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster, including Nagarhole National Park, is under consideration for designating it as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
The forest department offers jeep safaris as well as bus safaris (the former one is recommended). Several private forest lodges and jungle resorts at Kabini offer open-top jeep safaris, elephant safaris as well as boat safaris.
The highlight of the Park is the congregation of Asiatic Elephants, which occur during the summer months. Apart from mammals, one can also indulge in bird watching.
Although the landscape looks dry and parched in summers, Nagarahole is worth visiting in the dry season, when wild animals are spotted in large numbers near water sources. In fact it is the best time to spot elephants who come to the backwaters for a bath or to drink water.
