An extended wilderness holiday allows you to take in the beauty of Periyar at leisure. The Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) is the oldest and largest Protected Area in Kerala. It is here that the park authorities under the India Eco development Project should set benchmarks for Community Based Ecotourism Programs. There are several programs available and you can choose one according to the length of your stay.
A haven for nature lovers, there are some sixty-three species of mammals that have been recorded at PTR. Some 900 - 1000 Asiatic elephants roam these forests, and 323 species of birds. Take a Tribal Heritage and Village Tour to the Mannan Village and visit the local museum, which features several indigenous artifacts. Take a little time out and float atop a bamboo raft on the scenic Periyar Lake and then explore the remote inlets of the Periyar River.
