The Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR, as it is popularly known) is the oldest and largest Protected Area in Kerala. It is here that the park authorities under the India Eco development Project should set benchmarks for Community Based Ecotourism Programs.
There are several programs available and you can choose one according to the length of your stay. A haven for nature lovers, there are some sixty-three species of mammals that have been recorded at PTR. Periyar has a commendable population of Asiatic elephants (about 900-1000). The checklist of birds has 323 species of which all those belonging to the Western Ghats are there except for the Nilgiri laughing thrush. While in the area go on a Tribal Heritage and Village Tour to the Mannan Village where the local museum has a display featuring artifacts, costumes, vessels, agricultural implements and musical instruments among others.
