Kerala Temple Tour
Kerala Temple Tour

Suggested Duration : 9 Nights,10 Days
Travel Interests : Religion, Hinduism, Architecture

Temples, homes to the pantheon of Indian gods, are integral to the culture of Kerala. The temples you will see on this tour are of religious significance and architectural importance. You will learn how temples play an important role in the daily lives of the Hindu people of Kerala through prayer and various art forms.

A Kerala temple is usually low-profile and set in the beautiful countryside. Traditionally, the building height was not allowed to be higher than a coconut tree as it was intended that devotees should not be in awe of the building. Temple architecture is unique and timber is the main medium of construction.

Experience rituals, offerings and festivals that are unique to individual temples. Learn about the importance of elephants to ceremonies and festivities. The murals on temple walls that depict scenes from Indian mythology are remarkable and you will fall under the spell of it all when you see outer walls of temples lit up by a thousand oil lamps.

• Visit select temples of high religious significance and architectural importance.
• Understand the basics of Hinduism: religious practices, legends and myths, gods and goddesses, impact of religion on the daily life of devotees, significance of different types of prayers (poojas) at various times of  day, etc.
• Experience a unique architecture that extensively uses wood as a construction medium, a stark contrast to the rest of the Indian subcontinent (except Himachal Pradesh and Nepal), where stone is used. Also noted for circular roofs covered with copper tiles, and intricate and detailed wood work.
• Explore Vasthuvidya (ancient science of architecture) and its application in temple construction, where units of measurements are related to parts of body.
• Religious activities are not confined within the walls of a temple; people worship snakes in designated sacred groves.
• Various art forms and rituals that are closely associated with the religion.
• Consult an astrologist and see what future holds for you!
• Experience rituals and offerings that are very unique to each temple or specific occasions (like initiation to education).
• Spend an evening watching as outer walls of a temple are lit by 1000 oil lamps.
• See murals that depict stories from great Indian epics.
• Attend a temple festival.
• Understand the role of elephants in temple rituals and festivities.
