The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (90.422 sq. km) is famous for its wildlife. Its dry deciduous forests make it simpler to view the various species that inhabit the land. In 1905, the visionary Maharaja of Kochi, Sri Rama Varma set up a tramway to transport teakwood from Parambikulam to Chalakkudy. In what was once a flourishing trade, the timber was then exported to the rest of the World from Kochi Harbor. However, this came to an end in 1953.
Today, the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a highly protected ecological project in the Western Ghats. Remnants of the Kochi Forest Tramway in the form of bridges, rusted wagons, rails, wheels, etc. can still be seen along the old rail. Explore these relics on the foot trail that takes you along the erstwhile tramway, and you may also catch glimpses of the hundreds of birds and animals that inhabit the Sanctuary, including tigers, elephants, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Sloths and porcupines.
